LONDON — A man who strangled his wife in his sleep has walked from court a free man after the prosecution withdrew all charges against him.
Attachment 38828
Brian Thomas, 59, dreamt that intruders had broken into the couple’s camper van. During the nightmare he killed his wife, Christine, 57, while in a state known as automatism.
The judge told him that he had been a “decent man and a devoted husband” and bore no responsibility for his actions.
The Crown Prosecution Service described the case as unique and said that there had been less than 50 recorded instances worldwide. It had argued during the case that Thomas should be detained at a mental hospital but withdrew after evidence from three psychiatrists that it would “serve no useful purpose.”
Thomas, a retired steel worker from Neath, in south Wales, was on holiday with his wife when he woke up next to her lifeless body. The jury at Swansea Crown Court was played a recording of his 999 call and heard that he had been suicidal since her death.
Members of his family shouted “yes” as Paul Thomas QC, for the CPS, explained why the case was being withdrawn.
Both defense and prosecution had accepted at the start of the trial that Thomas was not in control of his actions at the time of the killing. The jury had been asked to decide not if he had killed his wife, but whether he was medically insane at the time.
Today they were directed to return a not guilty verdict, allowing Thomas to leave court an innocent man.
Paul Thomas told the jury: “We are no longer seeking a special verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity. We have a continuing duty to review the case and we took the opportunity yesterday to take stock of the situation.
“It is clear from the evidence that no useful purpose would be served by Thomas being detained in a psychiatric hospital.”
Iwan Jenkins, the chief prosecutor for CPS Dyfed Powys, said: “This has been a unique case with a unique set of circumstances.

In an apparently cold-blooded attempt at smuggling, a Lomita man was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport this week with more than a dozen wriggling lizards strapped to his chest.
Michael Plank, 40, was detained by U.S. Customs agents after they discovered 15 live lizards stuffed into his money belt, officials with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service said Friday.
Attachment 38827

Plank was returning from Australia on Tuesday when agents found two geckos, 11 skinks and two monitor lizards in his possession. Australian reptiles are strictly regulated, and Plank didn’t have a required export permit, officials said.

The lizards are valued at $8,500.

Smuggling wildlife into the U.S. is a felony punishable by a $250,000 fine and up to 20 years in prison. Plank has been released on a $10,000 bond and will be arraigned Dec. 21 in a Los Angeles federal court, authorities said.

For most of his years, Richie Kane struggled through a living hell of physical and sexual abuse, alcoholism and membership in one of the most notorious gangs in the country.
Attachment 38826
But now this former Hells Angel is empowered with a new force. Kane has chronicled his journey to a better life in a self-published book called "The Bronx Street Kid: Into 12-Step Recovery." He sees it as a way for him to pass on the hope he has now embraced.
"God has been so kind to me," he says, "allowed me the strength to come back."
Attachment 38825

Now the New York native describes his vision of heaven, where God "rides a Harley" and there is "no hatred, no violence, there are no beatings, and you ride your motorcycle in the clouds. You don't need gas!"
Kane smiles easily now. But for most of his 52 years, he kept his emotions bottled inside.
"I hated myself. I became cocky and (it was) tough to hide (my problems), because I felt really damaged when I was younger," he said.

Kane survived an alcoholic father who regularly beat him. He says he was once abused with a pair of hedge clippers, causing his head to bleed so badly his pillow stuck to his bloody scalp. He was never taken to the hospital.
He also says that he was sexually molested by a stranger near the railroad tracks by his Bronx home — but never told his parents.
"I knew my father would blame me and beat me."
Like father like son: Kane turned to the bottle. It was the only thing they shared.
He later became an even tougher guy, joining the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club because to him, it was the most prestigious — the best. "I was arrogant and full of drinking. It was all ego."
But being tough was a way of shielding himself, he now says. "I said to myself nobody is ever going to do to me what was done to me as a kid. I'm not going to let anybody put their hands on me. I became a fighter."
His real battle came after a rival gang's members beat him and left him for dead. He was then thrown out of the Hell's Angels because members thought him too rowdy, and said he made the gang look bad. His alcoholism got so bad it gave him the shakes. His health deteriorated even further, and he contracted Hepatitis C.
"I ran and hid in a bottle of booze because I didn't know there was anything good in me. I asked God to show me the good in me."
And, he says, God answered that prayer. Through Alcoholics Anonymous, meditation and looking to a higher power, Kane found strength to forgive his father, the man who molested him, and the men who tried to kill him.
"They never touched my core being. That's where the light is. There's a part of everybody that's pure that nobody can get to you there."
Kane is seriously considering going to college, perhaps to study journalism. He's ready to explore new challenges for a new life, and new strength.
"I don't know what's going to happen (in the future), but I'm not afraid."

Inglorious Basterds - Suicide bombers- Heroes or terrorists?

I just got the movie. As usual Tarantino delivered a winner. He really is a legend when it comes to writing a quality story and having everything fall into place so well. I thought the female Jewish character was excellent, and they sure did a good job at making the Nazi sniper war hero look like a tool.

In the end there are several heroes, including the girl, who sacrificed their lives for their cause. They all pretty much blew themselves up to finish off the Nazi high command, amongst a good number of German and French civilians.

I couldn't help but remember many on this forum and elsewhere curse suicide bombing as "terrorist". But is it? Apparently it isn't in this movie, but it is in real life. Or if we get specific, apparently it only is if a Muslim does it.

Is this a double standard or were the "basterds" terrorists too?

Da Vinci Code fans may thrill to dark conspiracies surrounding the secret history of early Christianity, but how many know about the real scholarly...

Da Vinci Code fans may thrill to dark conspiracies surrounding the secret history of early Christianity, but how many know about the real scholarly debate surrounding the young church? Even without a sleuthing Harvard "symboligist" involved, scholars have found plenty of intrigue in how early Christianity grew.
"How did the Mediterranean world become predominantly Christian?" asks historian Adam Schor of Long Island University, in Brookville, N.Y., in the current Journal of Religious History. "Generations of scholars have approached it, but each new theoretical angle seems to reopen basic questions."
Christianity spread throughout the Roman Empire, of course, after the death of Jesus around 33 AD, moving from a persecuted minority in the time of the Roman emperor Nero in 64 AD (blamed for Rome's most famous fire), to state religion with the Emperor Constantine's victory in 312 AD. But how — and how much — the early church grew in that time-frame remains a mystery, Schor notes, one that scholars have solved in widely divergent ways, starting in 1997 with sociologist Rodney Stark's book, The Rise of Christianity, with similarly conflicted answers.
"Appearances have deceived us here in many ways," Schor writes, looking at the various approaches since then that try to explain the growth in the Christian population. "Without concrete data, none (of the approches) truly counts early Christians." But, he suggests, each one may tell us something interesting. Past attempts include:
•The "mission" model, where "the rate of conversion (to Christianity) depends on the number of leading clerics and holy people," yielding a slowly accelerating curve of growth for the early church. The only problem is that by changing just a few numbers, say how many people your typical holy person converts every year, estimates will range for the early church having anywhere from 5.47 million to 15.8 million people by 350 A.D. (where the total population is no higher than 50 million.)
•The "values" model, where Christians taking to heart the advice to "be fruitful and multiply"led to exponential growth. Roman practices meanwhile, including infanticide, kept pagan population low. As well, Schor says, "values could influence conversion. Early Christians may have been vilified, but their values won admiration, even from some persecutors." In this model, early Christian numbers grow like microbes in a Petri dish, bringing about an even bigger range than the first model — from 3.5 to 34 million by 350 AD, depending on conversion rates.
•The "social" model, where every exposure to an early Christian is seen as possibly leading to a pagan converting, much like the chances of catching a cold. Diddling the conversion contagion odds coughs up estimates ranging from 3 to 20 million Christians by 350 A.D.
"Together, these efforts illustrate how careful modeling can help us to envision religious change in the Roman world. But they also reveal the limitations of modeling," Schor writes. "These models cannot tell us how many Christians there actually were. They can, however, help to investigate the factors that scholars have suggested drove conversion."
A new approach, he suggests, might borrow a kind of model popular with epidemiologists studying disease outbreaks called "network" analysis. Network analysis mathematically models each person as a node connected to others by bonds whose strength can vary by any number of factors, from family relationship to social status. That might account for life in the complicated Roman era, where status varied with wealth, citizenship, rank, occupation and reputation. "Network-based modeling thus offers a new (though still limited) path in the study of religious change," Schor concludes.
Of course, there's a drawback, he adds. "Realizing its potential, however, requires a technique unfamiliar to most historians: computer simulation." Even historians can't escape the computer era, it seems.
On the plus side, author Dan Brown may set his next thriller around a team of crack historians plundering a supercomputer to run historical simulations. Call it The Da Vinci Computer Code and we may have Hollywood's next blockbuster.

BALTIMORE — A preliminary report commissioned by the nation's Roman Catholic bishops to investigate the clergy sex abuse scandal has found no evidence that gay priests are more likely than heterosexual clergy to molest children, the lead authors of the study said Tuesday.
The full report by researchers at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice won't be completed until the end of next year. "What we are suggesting is that the idea of sexual identity be separated from the problem of sexual abuse," said Margaret Smith of John Jay College, in a speech to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. "At this point, we do not find a connection between homosexual identity and the increased likelihood of subsequent abuse from the data that we have right now."
The question has been raised repeatedly within and outside the church because the overwhelming majority of known victims were boys. As part of the church's response to the crisis, the Vatican ordered a review of all U.S. seminaries that, among other issues, looked for any "evidence of homosexuality" in the schools.
Yet, many experts on sex offenders reject any link between sexual orientation and committing abuse. Karen Terry, a John Jay researcher, said it was important to distinguish between sexual identity and behavior, and to look at who the offender had access to when seeking victims.
The bishops commissioned the $2 million study as part of widespread reforms they enacted at the height of the abuse crisis. The scandal erupted in 2002 with the case of one predator priest in the Archdiocese of Boston, then spread to every U.S. diocese and beyond.
Almost 14,000 molestation claims have been filed against Catholic clergy since 1950, according to tallies the bishops have released in recent years. Abuse-related costs have reached at least $2.3 billion in the same period.
At the meeting Tuesday, Bishop Edward Braxton of the Diocese of Belleville, Ill., asked the researchers whether their study indicated that homosexuality should be considered when evaluating a candidate for the priesthood. In 2005, the Vatican issued a policy statement that men with "deep-seated" attraction to other men should be barred from the priesthood.
Smith said: "If that exclusion were based on the fact that that person would be more probable than any other candidate to abuse, we do not find that at this time."
The latest findings affirmed previous reports that the rate of clergy abuse has declined steeply since the mid 1980s. Most of the claims being made now involve allegations of abuse from decades ago.
In a separate move on Tuesday, the bishops adopted a pastoral letter affirming the church's definition of marriage being between one man and one woman, and that sex is meant for procreation.

I travel a well known bloody trail in history daily, between Florida and the Alabama state line. One route I take everyday was made famous by this Gent:
John Wesley Hardin (May 26, 1853—August 19, 1895) was an outlaw and gunfighter of the American Old West. He was born in Bonham, Fannin County, Texas. When Hardin went to prison in 1878, he claimed to have killed 42 men.Hardin's criminal career resulted not only in the deaths of his victims but also in the deaths of his brother Joe and two cousins who were hanged by a lynch mob seeking revenge for a Hardin killing. He was later arrested on a train by the Texas Rangers in Pensacola Florida by Ranger John Barclay Armstrong. During his extradition back to trial and while transporting Hardin back to Texas, the Rangers found themselves at one point surrounded by a handful of his friends and gunfighters. Ranger Armstrong pulled his Colt Single Action revolver and placed it to Hardins head while slowly cocking the hammer back.... it takes four clicks to cock back a hammer on a single action Colt and Armstrong said the following words to Hardins men, "Only a Colt spells out it's name before bang". and "I cannot say who will fire first but I promise you I will fire second". It was those words that caused Hardins gang to retreat.

US anchor labels Rudd 'serial killer' over camels
October 5, 2009

Erin Burnett is unhappy with Kevin Rudd's 'air strikes' on feral camels.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has been labelled a serial killer on US TV.

Erin Burnett, an anchor on American financial news channel CNBC, launched a verbal attack targeting Mr Rudd after his Government's decision to spend $19 million to cull feral camels in the outback.

"There is a serial killer in Australia and we are going to put a picture up so we can see who it is," a stern-faced Burnett said during a segment on CNBC .

A large photo of Mr Rudd was then shown.

"That would be the Prime Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd," Burnett said.

"OK, well, do you know what he is doing?

"He has launched air strikes - air strikes - against camels in the outback."

Burnett, with a stuffed toy camel in front of her, broke away from her usual analysis of stock movements on Wall St to vent about the camel cull.

She raised the issue during a segment with CNBC's colourful financial guru Jim Cramer.

Burnett said there were a million camels living wild in Australia and the animals would be shot.

"They are slaughtering them?" Cramer, looking shocked, asked Burnett.

"They are slaughtering them," Burnett replied.

She also complained the meat and milk from the camels would be wasted.

"Apparently there is a billion dollars of meat out there," Burnett said.

"Are they going to do anything with it?" Cramer asked.

"No. They're just slaughtering them," she said.

"That's genocide. Camelcide," Cramer commented.

Burnett then told Cramer she hoped Australians would see her segment.

"I hope they have this on in the morning in Australia," she said.

As the discussion came to a close the photo of Rudd re-appeared on the screen.

"There he is," Burnett said.

"That is the man who approved it."

Question: should a government in the modern age use bombs, guns and helicopters to slaughter animals like camels?
