Sounds like General Rupertus should have gotten the hate mail, for not letting the Army help after 3 days .

Don't think I've seen it, I'll search for it, thanks for the heads up.

How ironic that such a paradise was turned into such a Hell.

General Rupertus' decision to exclude additional forces because he wanted all the "glory" is symptomatic of the hubris of top brass around the world. Peleliu wasn't secured in three or four days, Moscow wasn't captured that first summer, and how many campaigns failed to bring the troops back "home by Christmas..."? Egotists used to subordinates' scraping and bowing too easily forget that the enemy has their own plans and resolve.

General MacArthur adopted the "island hopping" strategy in the Pacific, recognizing that it wasn't worth the blood required to capture every island between Australia and Japan, nor was it necessary. Great generals use maneuver and force concentration to strike where necessary. Glory seekers charge their men 'hey diddle diddle, right up the middle' in Charge of the Light Brigade fashion...hoping to win through sheer will power. If modern warfare has taught anything , it's that sheer will power is insufficient in the face of modern weapons manned by competent men regardless of their color or creed. Unless of course you are willing to spill more blood than your enemy has bullets.

There is a thin red line between bravery in the face of death, and sheer pigheaded stupidity that uses up blood like water.

And behind every bloody pigheaded jackass with a hardon is a higher-up with a boot up his ass.

It's how any military works.
