Niagara Falls| Divers from the U.S coast guardo.0took parto.0this morning, in a delicate wreck recovery operation to bring to the surface a Nazi submarineo.0discoveredo.0two weeks agoo.0o.0at the bottom of Lake Ontario.

The U-boato.0was spotted for the first time by amateur scuba divers in late January and they had contacted the authorities. Archaeologists associated witho.0Niagara University ofo.0o.0and master divers from theo.0U.S Coast Guardo.0were mobilized on site too.0determine what it was, and they soon realized that they were dealing with a German submarine that sank during World War II.

A wreck recovery vesselo.0o.0of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society was mandated to refloat theo.0ship and bring it back to Niagara Falls, where it must be restored before becoming a museum ship. The delicate recovery operation took nearly 30 hours to complete, but the submarine was finallyo.0brought down on the bank with relative ease.

The submarine was identified as the UX-791, a uniqueo.0experimentalo.0Germano.0submarine, based on the U-1200o.0model, and known to have participated in the “Battle of the St. Lawrence”.o.0It o.0was reported missing in 1943 and was believed to have been sunk near the Canadian coast.

Professor Mark Carpenter, who leads the team of archaeologists, believes thato.0the U-boat could have traveled up the St-Lawrence River,o.0all the way to the Greato.0Lakes, whereo.0it intended to disturb the American economy.

A report from the dated from February 1943 suggests,o.0that the ship could have attacked and destroyed three cargo ships and two fishing vessels, even damaging the USS Sable (IX-81), an aircraft carrier of the U.S. navy that was usedo.0for training in the Great Lakes,o.0before finally being sunk by anti-sub grenades launched by a Canadiano.0frigate.

“We have known for a long time that the Nazis had sent some of their U-boats in the St-Lawrence River, but this is the first proofo.0that they actually reached the Great Lakes,” Professor Carpenter told reporters. “This could explain the mysteriouso.0ship disappearances that took place in the regiono.0in 1943, and the reported “Battle of Niagara Falls” which had always been dismissed as ao.0collective hallucination caused byo.0fear.”

The restoration of the submarine could take more than two years, but once completed, the museum ship is expected to becomeo.0one of theo.0major tourist attractions of the region.

Not true but, you would think the lakes and the St Lawrence river must have been a military objective of the Germans

There really is one from WWI.
It was displayed after the war then had to be sunk.

The German U-Boat UC-97 was on tour. It was kind of a post-war, 'we won' tour, and so people got to go on to it and see it, and then as a condition of the armistice, it had to be sunk in deep water.
