Almost 70% of grain crops grown go to feed livestock and could feed millions or more people. Overgrazing of livestock and deforestation caused by meat production are well documented problems. As well as methane, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide emissions that come from livestock which are major pollutors to the environment.

Meat production, factory farming also uses far more water resources than production of grain. If we go back to a time when we were genuine hunters and gatherers maybe you can say that eating meat was better for the environment, but in our modern age with factory farming you'd have to be dreaming.

And who isn't a hypocrite? It's all about harm reduction.
