Russia's new attack submarine goes for sea trials

ST. PETERSBURG, September 12 (RIA Novosti)

Russia's first Graney class nuclear-powered attack submarine set course on Monday for scheduled sea trials, the Sevmash shipyard said.
The Severodvinsk has been under construction at the Sevmash shipyard in northern Russia since 1993 and was launched in June last year after numerous delays due to financing problems. The submarine is expected to enter service with the Russian Navy by the end of this year.

Graney class nuclear submarines are designed to launch a variety of long-range cruise missiles (up to 3,100 miles or 5,000 km), with conventional or nuclear warheads, and effectively engage submarines, surface warships and land-based targets.

The submarine's armament includes 24 cruise missiles and eight torpedo launchers, as well as mines and anti-ship missiles.
The second vessel of the Graney class, the Kazan, is being built at Sevmash while the construction of the third submarine will begin this year.
The Russian Navy plans to receive up to 10 Graney class subs by 2020.

Russian Navy orders 3 more Krivak IV class frigates

Russia's United Shipbuilding Corporation said on Wednesday it has signed a contract with the Defense Ministry on the construction of another three Krivak IV class frigates for the Russian Navy.
The new contract under the 2011 state defense order stipulates the construction of the warships by 2016.
The first three Krivak IV class frigates are being built at the Yantar Shipyard in the Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad. The warships are expected to enter service with Russia's Black Sea Fleet based on the Crimean peninsula.
A Krivak IV class frigate is equipped with a 100-mm gun, a Shtil medium-range air defense system, Club-N supersonic anti-ship missiles, two Kashtan point defense systems, two twin 533-mm torpedo launchers, and an anti-submarine warfare helicopter.

The artic is melting, revealing new areas to the nations surrounding it. It would only be idiotic to not have a strong navy when the argument of who get to do what where starts in a couple of years.

The Russians have never been a great naval power. Land warfare is more their style.

I'd rate the Russian navy pretty highly based on their subs alone. They've evolved quite a bit since WW2.
