Sudan Conflict: South Sudan claims it shot down Sudanese Mig-29
South Sudan says it shot down Sudanese fighter jet as tensions escalate
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (CNN) -- In a dangerous escalation of border violence, South Sudan accused rival Sudan of war mongering Wednesday and said it had shot down a fighter jet sent to bomb the oil-rich Pan Akuac region.
South Sudanese Chief Negotiator Pagan Amum charged that Sudan was orchestrating fresh attacks against its southern neighbor. The Sudan People's Liberation Army, he said, shot down a MiG-29 jet fighter in South Sudan's Unity state.
The hostilities put a bitter note on negotiations between the two nations at an African Union meeting in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
Sudan denies fighter jet down in S Sudan
Sudan's military has denied that one of its jets has been shot down, as its neighbour South Sudan alleged.
'What media reported, that we lost a fighter plane in Unity state, we confirm that is completely incorrect,' Sawarmi Khaled Saad, the Sudanese army spokesman, told reporters.
The South accused Khartoum of having ordered an aerial attack on its territory.
'The forces of the Republic of South Sudan were able to shoot down and destroy one MiG-29,' South Sudan's lead negotiator Pagan Amum told reporters in Addis Ababa where talks with Sudan on security failed to result in an agreement.
But Saad said in Khartoum that MiG 29s are not used against Unity state, which the South says has been repeatedly bombed from the air since border clashes began 10 days ago.
Sudan's army spokesman said a Sudanese position in the oil-rich Heglig area on the disputed border came under attack, 'and we reacted to this with artillery bombardment.'

South-Sudan has the right to defend it's borders.
