But cutting 5% from the top rate whilst everyone else watches thier bills go thorugh the roof and their savings crawl whilst their pensions burn?

You do realise that those stats are over a year old and were based on a worse case scenario. Most of the figures that get stated relating to the bailouts are based on a worse case scenario i.e. if all government backed loans went bad. RBS are due to repay the last of £75 billion of government loans back in the next week. It would be like me guaranteeing all of my friends mortgages. Yes I could be exposed to millions in loans but the likelyhood is that very little or nothing will happen. At present with RBS we are down about £23 billion, all based on the current shareprice of the government holding.
I am not saying that it is a great result but nowhere near as bad as some people like to portray.
