U.S. officials(Obama admin) confirm release of senior Taliban prisoners

Up to 20 high-level insurgent prisoners have been released from NATO custody in Afghanistan over the past two years in an effort to boost peace negotiations with the Taliban in various regions of the country, according to U.S. officials.

The insurgents, held at the jointly-run NATO-Afghan detention facility of Parwan, are considered "bad guys," said one U.S. official who did not want to be identified discussing a sensitive issue. Their release was undertaken, the official said, often at the request of the Afghan government. In all cases, they were assessed as unlikely to rejoin the insurgency.

The official added that the Taliban detainees had been in the maximum security Parwan detention center “for a reason” – but that NATO "does not release anyone when there is a high likelihood they will rejoin the insurgency." The official said he was aware of only two releases in the last nine months.

Some previously released Afghan detainees, especially from the U.S.-run detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have allegedly rejoined the insurgency, suggesting such programs are not without risk.

The U.S. official said the releases occur “when officials determine that the benefits significantly outweigh the risks.”

Indeed many people have died from released Enemy combatants.. Our soldiers and civilians are being put in harms way by politicians Yup They said it.. The release of captured Enemy combatants in afghanistan is up to the military not the Obama admin so they wont take responsibility for it

Did you actually see the movie? How are kids fighting for their home, the same as Islamic radicals who subjugate people in various countries? How are Taliban from Pakistan fighting for their home in Afghanistan?

The Taliban are by a majority from Afghanistan NOT Pakistan. Of course they are kids who believe they are fighting a foreign invader, most of them have no idea that 9/11 even happened, all they see are foreigners. The top level Taliban may have their ideology they are following and believe we are evil and must be kicked out, but the rank and file soldiers has no clue.

The Taliban are by in large pashtun from the tribal belts of Pakistan. Yes there are afghan taliban but theres also Arab taliban.

The Taliban was not BORN in afghanistan the taliban idealology came out of Pakistan. Its not indigenous to Afghanistan. The taliban Came to power through Pakistans support

It's a comfortable myth they're all from Pakistan and trying to subjugate the freedom loving Afghans but that is demonstrably untrue. The Majority of Taliban in Afghanistan have always been Afghans and are first and foremost Pashtun nationalists.

Bear in mind the Pashtuns themselves straddle both countries - over arbitrary borders drawn by retreating Empires - so many of those newer cross-border 'Pakistan Taliban' may not even see themselves as Pakistanis.
