Russia Revamps Missile Defenses Around Moscow

Russia will reactivate mothballed ballistic missile silos around Moscow as part of deep modernization of a missile defense network protecting the Russian capital, former chief of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces, Col. Gen. (Ret) Viktor Yesin said on Monday.

The A-135 (NATO: ABM-3) anti-ballistic missile network is deployed around Moscow to counter enemy missiles targeting the city or its surrounding areas. It became operational in 1995 and consists of the Don-2N battle management radar and two types of ABM missiles.
“The A-135 system is being thoroughly modernized,” Yesin told RIA Novosti. “The missiles and other elements, including detection and tracking components, are being upgraded.”

Two launch sites with long-range 51T6 (NATO: SH-11 'Gorgon') exo-atmospheric interceptor missiles were deactivated in 2007 as the missiles became obsolete. They will be equipped with new long-range missiles and reactivated during the modernization.
“There are no plans to build new launch sites as the mothballed ones will be reactivated,” the general said.

The A-135 system is compliant with the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty from which the United States unilaterally withdrew in 2002.

Russia orders record number of trasport planes

Russia's Defense Ministry on Thursday signed a contract worth about 140 billion rubles ($4 billion) to buy 39 IL-476 transport planes, President Vladimir Putin said after watching the modified IL-76 undergo flight tests at the Aviastar-SP aviation complex in Ulyanovsk.
"This is the biggest such order in the history of this country’s aviation industry,” Putin said.

Thanking all those who designed and built the new aircraft the President said it was an essentially new plane that Russia's aviation industry has produced in the past 21 years, more reliable, economical and far-going.

"I am confident that this plane will enjoy great demand here, and among our possible partners abroad," Putin added.

Irkut Corporation Handed Over the First Two Su-30SM Fighters to the Russian Air Force

JSC Irkut Corporation (part of JSC United Aircraft Corporation) handed over the first 2 Su-30SM fighters to the Russian Air Force. The delivery-acceptance act was signed on November 22 at the Irkutsk aviation plant – branch of JSC IRKUT Corporation.

Oleg Demchenko, President of JSC IRKUT Corporation, at the signing ceremony said: “We’ve been working for export for many years, and now started to deliver aircraft to the Motherland. 9 of our new Yak-130s are flying at the Borisoglebsk training center to date, and now we are delivering the first 2 Su-30SM fighters to the Russian Air Force. This is a historic event for our team, for the Sukhoi company and for the whole United Aircraft Corporation”.

Alexander Harchevsky, Chief of the Military research and training center named after N. Zhukovski and Y. Gagarin said at the event: “Su-30SM will improve combat capabilities of the Russian Air Force”. The famous military pilot, who headed the Center of retraining pilots named after V. Chkalov for many years, having experience in piloting the type of fighters mentioned such capabilities of the Su-30SM as simultaneously engage and destroy multiple targets as well as super-maneuverability. “It’s very important that the aircraft is in serial production and will be supplied to the Air Force not by units, but squadrons” – stressed Maj. Gen Harchevsky.

Su-30SM multirole super-maneuverable fighter is the further development of the Su-30MK combat aircraft family. JSC Sukhoi Design Bureau’ specialists designed the fighter in accordance with the requirements of the Russian Air Force in terms of radar system, radio and recognition system, ejection seats and a number of support systems. The weaponry configuration was changed as well.

The contract on 30 multirole fighter delivery by 2015 was signed between the Russian Ministry of Defence and JSC IRKUT Corporation in March 2012.

Wreck of Soviet sub found in Baltic: Sweden military

AFP - The wreck of a Soviet submarine that was sunk during World War II has been found at the bottom of the Baltic Sea off the Swedish island of Oeland, Sweden's military said on Monday.
The wreck is believed to be that of the S-6, which disappeared in September 1941.
"In the autumn of 1941 several Russian submarines left their home bases to patrol the Baltic Sea. Several of them never returned. One of them has now been found, blown up into large pieces, southeast of Oeland," the armed forces said in a statement.
The S-6 was probably blown apart by a German mine, though the military said it was impossible to say for certain what had happened.


The vessel was found in international waters in Sweden's economic zone, in a heavily-mined area known as the "Wartburg minefield".
Initially located by a Swedish team of civilian divers several months ago, the discovery has been confirmed by a navy ship specialised in submarine rescues.
In June 2009, divers found the wreck of the S-2, another Soviet sub sunk by mines in January 1940 with some 50 crew members on board, in waters further north between Sweden and Finland.

Russia Orders 20 An-70 Airplanes From Ukraine

The Russian Defense Ministry has ordered 20 An-70 airplanes, which are produced by the Antonov state enterprise (Kyiv), from Ukraine.
Prime Minister Mykola Azarov announced this in an interview with Ukrainian television channels.
"We have been working on this aircraft (An-70) since 1993, almost 20 years, with interruptions - either working on it or not. However, from this year, we have been able to make the leap, interest the largest buyer - the Ministry of Defense of Russia. They have already ordered more than 20 An-70 aircraft," he said.

According to him, the first serially produced An-70 airplane will emerge in 2013.
Azarov said that the An-70 is the world's largest cargo airplane and that its production will affirm Ukraine as a producer of such unique equipment.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Azarov recently instructed the Ministry of Finance to ensure funding for the project for production of the An-70 military transport aircraft.
The Ministry of Defense intends to take delivery of two An-70 airplanes in 2014.
In March, Ukraine and Russia approved a mechanism for cooperation on production of An-70 airplanes.
The An-70 is a medium-range cargo airplane designed in the 1990s but not commercially produced.

Russia to Get 20 New Aerospace Defense Radars

MOSCOW, January 8 (RIA Novosti) - Russia’s Aerospace Defense Forces will received about 20 new radar stations this year, a Defense Ministry spokesman said on Tuesday.
The radars will include systems of different classes and modifications, including Gamma-S, Nebo-U and Podlyot-K, as well as modernized Desna and Kasta systems, Col. Alexei Zolotukhin said.

He said on Sunday the Russian military had tracked about 40 launches of foreign and domestic ballistic missiles and space rockets last year. The new radar stations that have been put into operation as part of the Russian missile attack early warning system enable it to track not only ballistic targets and space objects but also aerodynamic targets, he added.

The system will be even more effective following the creation of the Integrated Space Tracking and Combat Command and Control System. Russia is able to reliably detect ballistic missile launches and monitor and control all probable directions for a missile attack, Zolotukhin said.

The ministry also said Russia will start building new radar stations later this year.
Russia announced it will no longer rent the Gabala radar station in Azerbaijan. The lease, signed in 2002, expired in December. Russia is replacing the Gabala radar station, which has played a crucial role in its missile defense system, with a new system based at Armavir in Russia’s southern Krasnodar Territory.

Russia, China plan to boost missile defence cooperation

Beijing, Jan 9 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russia and China are planning to intensify their cooperation on missile defence in response to America's growing missile defence potential around the globe, a Russian security council official said Wednesday.

"We are concerned about US plans to build a global missile defence system, including in the Asia-Pacific region," Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev said during the 8th round of Russian-Chinese consultations on strategic security in Beijing.

"Our Chinese partners share our concerns and we have agreed to coordinate our actions in that respect," he said, adding that it would help both countries to develop a "constructive" approach toward missile defence issue.

Russia and China have been keeping a close eye on US moves to deploy missile defences around the arc of the South China Sea in addition to the planned European missile shield.
Moscow and Beijing are objecting US missile defence initiatives saying they are worsening the global and regional security environment, especially military and non-proliferation processes, to the detriment of Russian and Chinese nuclear deterrents.
Russia and China have held regular bilateral consultations on strategic issues since 2005.

Russian Army: Footwraps Are Out, Socks Are In

MOSCOW, January 14 (RIA Novosti) – Over many years, the cloth wrapping worn by soldiers under their heavy boots has become a symbol of Russian military tradition and a nostalgic memento for many former conscripts, but Russia’s defense minister says they have long outlived their purpose and should completely cease to be part of the military uniform by the end of 2013.

Recently appointed Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Monday he was appalled that conscripts in some military units were still wearing foot cloths, and ordered that this practice be abandoned by the end of this year.
“We must forget the word ‘footwraps’ by the end of 2013,” Shoigu said at a televised meeting with military top brass in Moscow.

Footwraps, called "portyanki" in Russian, are rectangular pieces of cloth that are worn by soldiers, wrapped around the feet to avoid chafing, absorb sweat and improve the fit.
Footwraps were worn with tall boots before socks became widely available and remained in use by armies in Eastern Europe up until the beginning of the 21st century.

While foot cloths and tall boots were taken off the list of essential garb for the Russian armed forces in 2007 as part of the transition to a new, more comfortable and efficient uniform, their use has never been abandoned completely.

A source in the Defense Ministry told RIA Novosti that tall boots were still worn by soldiers for specific tasks, and footwraps were the best fit for this type of military footwear, as “the socks wear out quickly and offer poor protection from blisters.”
“The full ban on footwraps in the army has never been implemented, and it is unlikely to be enforced in the future, either,” the source said.

The Russian army has issued footwraps since Peter the Great imported the custom from the Dutch Army in the 1690s.
They are notorious for the foul smell that they develop when worn under military conditions, where soldiers are often unable to change or dry the cloths for days.
Russian veterans used to jokingly pride themselves on the stench of their footwear, referring to their footwraps as "chemical weapons" that would defeat any enemy unaccustomed to the smell.

A WWII T34 Tank is recovered from the bottom of a lake in Estonia. After a little cleanup, it runs!

It had been captured by the Germans, and that's why there are German markings. They disposed of it in a lake to stop the Russians from reusing it. It was under several feet of peat moss under the water.
