U.K. Retailer HMV Enters Administration
LONDON—HMV Group HMV.LN -8.33%PLC, the U.K.'s last remaining main-street music retail chain, entered administration on Tuesday, highlighting the consumer shift toward online shopping and digital downloads. HMV—which sells DVDs, CDs and other merchandise at its 243 stores—said that, after discussions with its creditors, it was unable to trade outside of insolvency protection and planned to appoint administrators from Deloitte LLP to oversee the sale or closure of the business. The decision could bring an end to 92 years of trading in the U.K. and puts more than 4,000 jobs at risk. A number of private bidders are expected to make approaches for HMV, buyout firm Endless said. Endless said it had already spoken to Deloitte about buying the business out of administration, adding that there was still demand for physical products. A person familiar with the matter said that Better Capital, BCAP.LN 0.00%a U.K.-based turnaround vehicle headed by veteran investor Jon Moulton, had also been contacted by administrators and would look at the company, although this person cautioned that it was too early to say if Better Capital was seriously interested in HMV. HMV is the latest in a list of retail casualties in the U.K. and across Europe, as stores have found themselves unable to compete on price or convenience with online retailers. Last week, U.K. camera retailer Jessops also called in the administrators, while electricals chain Comet and sports store JJB Sports closed their doors toward the end of last year. Consumers are increasingly choosing to download music and movies from vendors such as Apple Inc.'s AAPL -3.03%iTunes or stream them from services such as Spotify and Netflix rather than shop in stores. Last year, videogame retailer Game Group went into administration, while last week, Virgin France, France's No. 2 entertainment chain, also filed for bankruptcy. In the U.K., more than 73% of film and music sales are now made online, up from 6.5% in 2005, highlighting the scale of the problem facing HMV. Although HMV has an online offering, analysts say it has been drowned out by bigger and more experienced Internet retailers, especially Amazon.com Inc. AMZN -0.22% "In the digital era, HMV's business model has simply become increasingly irrelevant and unsustainable," said Neil Saunders, managing director of retail analysts Conlumino. "The company has tried to innovate through selling more electricals and gadgets but these initiatives were never going to be enough to counteract the terminal decline in its core business." HMV, which stands for His Master's Voice and whose logo features a dog sitting next to a gramophone, opened its first store in 1921 and floated on the London Stock Exchange LSE.LN -0.70%in 2002, with an initial market value of £1 billion ($1.61 billion). The shares reached a high of 274 pence in early 2005 but, following a series of profit warnings and funding issues, closed Monday at 1.1 pence, valuing the company at just £4.7 million. The retailer last year sold off its book store Waterstones for £53 million and its Hammersmith Apollo music venue for £32 million, but said on Tuesday it was unable to continue trading without breaching its banking covenants. The U.K.'s administration process is similar to filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...153317712.html An-HMV-store-in-1963-009.jpg

My nearest large shopping town is half empty, most of it is made up of pound stores and charity shops.

Another one:
COMMENT: IN PRAISE OF THE CHAIN STORE As HMV falters, John Twells of experimental label Type Records explains why the death of the mass-market record shop is a tragedy for us all. http://www.dummymag.com/features/201...e-chain-store/ I was a regular at Tower Records and HMV when I first moved to London. Good memories and good times.

Sad day. Bought my first LP in HMV.
Hate to think how many hours I've spent browsing album covers in that place.

Well, if any of you do on-line shopping then you only have yourselves to blame (that`s the price you pay. Literally).

When you fail to avoid the worlds slowest and most obvious train wreck, you get little sympathy.
Retail offers little value, not anymore. |
