I'll put up some pics of it later if'n ya want.

So yeah, if someone has a slightly used Guild Gun (or any Marlin lever) for sale at a good price, steer clear. Buy a new one, look it over real good, and you'll get a beauty.
Thanks guys, good advice here! I will buy new what ever I get.

Seems I've sorta come to a conclusion on the cal. I'm gonna get - .45-70.
Probably had it in the back of my mind all along, since I'm a .45ACP nut to begin with! And I can get revolvers that can use both types of .45's too!

Took a long look at the Marlin site.
Tend to favor the 1895CB

https://www.marlinfirearms.com/lever...e/model-1895cb

26" barrel, 9 shot mag, will handle all types of .45 cartridges, and tapped for a scope so I can transfer my B&L scope over to it, and a left side hammer spur that will work for me!
And a good price too.
But the Henry is still in the running....gonna be hard to beat the Henry!

Many manufacturers I eliminated because they don't make a lever action, or chamber the .45. I was surprised to see Savage doesn't make a lever action anymore, but mine is an old one I've had since 1970, and my brother has it, to look at the cost of a rebuild, and I can't remember the model.
He's a nut for long guns, so I may trade it with him for one of his 5.56 bolt actions. He's got like 4 or 5 of them anyway, so he won't miss one!

Actually I can believe that.
Compare to the stone-age spearing they use to have, then the metal harpoons, then guns, it's obvious it don't take much energy to get through the blubber to the kill.

I've made my decision, Let me describe how I came to my conclusion:
Over the last few weeks, I've talked with my brother, who's a long gun nut, and a few friends, and you guys online.
Everybody praised the Henry as the best for usage and range; but knocked it for the price, and not many add on's that can also get costly.
We're talking two grand minimum for an 'original', with the dealer discount.
Nobody I talked to owned a Henry. When asked why, they just rolled their eyes, and said I wish I could afford one.
I'd love to have one, but the price is too prohibitive.

So I'm going' with the Marlin 1895 Cowboy.
The price is right. I can get one with the add-ons I want for just under a grand.
My brother doesn't have a .45 colt, but he does have a Marlin 336 30-30, one of his dear rifles, that he's had for years, with no problems. A few of my friends own .45s, but they're bolt actions, so they couldn't comment on lever actions.

Here's sort of a table on what I looked at between the 2 guns:

Barrel length: Henry 24.5" Marlin 26"
Load out: Henry 13 Marlin - 9
Throw: Henry 12.5" Marlin - 13 3/8"
Twist: Henry 1:16 Marlin 1:20
Weight: Henry 9lbs Marlin 7lbs
Safety: Henry 1/2 cock Marlin trigger block
Price MSRP Henry $2300 Marlin $895

I dunno, I would still put out the bit extra for the Henry,
Has Remington stopped pushing units out of the factories with plastic shims for the customer to sort out the ill fitting stock, quantity over quality just to get the units sold figures up is not really a good idea in regard to rifles,
any case your choice.

Check out post #37 and #40 above.

Next week, I'm visiting most of the gun shops around here, and put my hands on any new Marlin they got in stock, hopefully one will have an 1895 I can look at. Best way to tell, put the gun in your hands.

Looking at long gun forums on the internet, most stopped around '12 '13 and didn't really address the remlin problems.

Did find some magazine articles about it:

http://www.gunsandammo.com/reviews/marlin-1894-review/

http://www.realguns.com/articles/425.htm

http://gunblast.com/Marlin-1895CB.htm

Of course I will keep an eye out for any Henry .45, used or new, that might be reasonably priced. Never know...........
