Default United Nations to launch first ever space mission

Quote:
United Nations recently announced that they are planning to their launch their first ever space mission. Included in this plan is to invite other countries that cannot afford a trip to orbit the space.

This idea of the United Nations is to launch the "Dream Chaser," a reusable spacecraft with the size of a regional jet that can land on an ordinary airport. Inside it, there will be 20 to 25 laboratory stations that will allow countries to conduct an experiment in microgravity. Their target date will be in 2021 and the first run will be a 14-day flight in low Earth orbit. UN members can apply to participate, especially the developing countries, according to Futurism.

Together with the Sierra Nevada Corporation, manufacturer of the Dream Chaser, UN will discuss about their plan at the International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico this week. This partnership aims to give a chance to other countries to explore space.

The head of Sierra Nevada Corporation space division, Mark Sirangelo, said that "the main goal is to reach out to communities and to countries and to young people around the world who may never have had the opportunity to do something in space." He added that countries do not have to purchase a single mission, instead they could be part of the collaboration with other countries abroad, reports KPCC.

Meanwhile, UN's Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) is also planning to give technical support to other countries that have not experienced any microgravity experiments yet. The chief of UNOOSA's Space Applications Section, Luc St-Pierre, shared that "It's not only the experiment itself, it's the whole preparation, the training, the courses that are necessary to be developed with the students.

The funding is still a major concern. But Sirangelo shared that the collaborations will look for sponsors and each country will pay an experiment fee for them to go to space. Thus, their target is to get a low manageable number so that everybody has a chance to participate. In line with this, one of the UNOOSA's advocacies is to promote a peaceful use of outer space, but until now it does not launch a mission itself.

Basically, the United States is going to let the UN launch one of our spacecraft. Giving other nations an opportunity to participate in space exploration and research. Nice looking piece, sharp. Won't be much longer, going into space will become a recreational activity for average humans, hopefully.

Still decades away but it's plausible to think that one day average Americans (albeit for a nice chunk of change) will be able to look down on the Earth from a passenger shuttle and see our planet in all its magnificent glory.

Looks like UNs first ever space flight will use 1960-70s US Aerospace technology and made by a Private American corporation and funded by a US Government Grant.

Remember ShutUp, back then any public funded research by the government was in the public domain. The company couldn't patent it, and the government couldn't keep it secret for very long. Not like our government can keep secrets in the 1st place.

So another UN adventure we get to finance?

Lovely.

Ever since the USA landed the 1st humans on the moon (and we and nobody else since), and with the non-proliferation and non-exploitation of space treaties (that the ChiComs have never signed); I've always thought that only the UN should be only authority allowed to put anything into near space or outer space.
Namely under the UN charter, all nations should work together to 'explore' space.

Now, Aquina will accuse me of being a 'baby-boomer' indoctrinated socialist.
But with the comedy and pathos of all the nations that have launched anything and everything into space, has made near space a very big shooting gallery.
The ISS has statistically changed it course at least every third orbit; there is that much trash in near space to avoid.
If something isn't done, it will get worse.

And think about this: If and when the ChiComs land on the moon, they can claim it for their own, 'cause they didn't sign the treaties.

Yeah I get that, my point was that it is being labeled as a the UNs first ever space mission. When in reality they are just loading up a few autonomous scientific experiments on a autonomous space craft designed and launched in USA.

They are making it out to seem as if Global astronauts are going up in space to perform experiments in space on a UN spacecraft.

These quotes are a bit ambiguous:

Mark Sirangelo, said that "the main goal is to reach out to communities and to countries and to young people around the world who may never have had the opportunity to do something in space."

Luc St-Pierre, shared that "It's not only the experiment itself, it's the whole preparation, the training, the courses that are necessary to be developed with the students.
