DELL talked him through how to revert back to windows 8.1 in 10 minutes, shows you do get some good back up service from DELL.
I usually go with Dell or ASUS these days unless I want a gaming laptop then I buy by spec usually from ASUS, MSI, or Dell.

HP is legendary shit. It's not uncommon for me to see HP stuff with failed BIOS or other core hardware failures. The enclosures are also cheap.

Back in the 286-PIII days I got Compaq a lot though for x86 stuff.

I always put an image backup on fresh installs for builds and hide them for costumers after all the updates, saves some grief.
Getting them to backup is another matter, most turn it off and forget it and or lose the recovery disk.
One old gal was using it for a coaster.

You can't go wrong with full partition backups after a fresh install&update. I do Clonezilla images to secondary volumes and intranet storage.

98-2005 I used DeepFreeze which is still maintained. It basically restored the partition each boot between MBR and VBR execution and you can manage the snapshot with authentication.

I just spent a whole evening upgrading my 5+ year old Intel I7 from Win 7 to Win 10.
Now I have to set up my preferences, that 10 wants to keep.
you have to go deep into the programs to tell the OS and browsers not to do what they automatically presume for themselves.

Ah yes .. search is still your friend.
Simply type the words relevant to what you want to do, keep it short three words or less, I'm sure you will find what you need.
Or just type control panel then pin it to the task bar or desk top when you go in that should help you.
Also .. some Providers have a program you can download at their main page.
Its a compatibility pack but its basically for preserving your internet favorites.
As for Microsoft.

Sorry about the redo, had to take a hard piss in the middle of the reply .. I just don't do well under pressure.
Good luck.

Tin, I was wondering how many people you did this work for went back to their old OS?
What do you think about 10?

Still have about 2 weeks to convert back (MS gives you 30 days to decide).
Except for a few annoying bugs: like my old WIN 7 games are gone, no home tab in edge (I use firefox anyway), display settings completely useless compared to my OM manager (10 doesn't always reset the resolution back to default after using some older games and programs, so I have to do it manually), auto update doesn't do other programs (as far as I can find, but no real problem since they update themselves), if the 'puter goes to sleep then wakes it doesn't automatically reassign an IP address to my wifi so I gotta troubleshoot (didn't have this problem with 7);
10 doesn't really seem any different from 7 or 8, just seems more simplistic in appearance and function.
MS is just doing what they've always done since 3 and NT, just shuffling the icons around, and putting functions deeper into more pops and clicks. Sure MS has streamlined the line count, even the systems call's, but windows is still the messiest dirtiest OS ever.

Went back to win 7 over the weekend. Got in just under the time limit. The KB is still there, but I've had no problems with any popups..... yet. Give it time.

10 didn't run a few of my older programs properly (mathmatica & circuitworks), and wouldn't load in 2 new programs I bought. On the re-conversion a few programs had to be fixed or reinstalled, but that wasn't a real problem.

Put your OP in a folder on my desktop, as you advised, just in case I have future troubles with 10.
