Default A US navy destroyer has collided with a merchant ship off the coast of Japan

AN American Navy destroyer has collided with a merchant ship off the coast of Japan, causing serious damage and injuries.
The US Military confirmed that the USS Fitzgerald has been involved in an accident with a Philippine-flagged container ship, 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka.
There is flooding in three compartments of the destroyer and some injuries, an official told Associated Press.

In a brief written statement, the US Pacific Fleet in Hawaii said the Navy had requested assistance from the Japanese Coast Guard.
In a Tweet, the US Navy said local maritime authorities were on the scene to assist.
Live footage shot from a helicopter Saturday morning by Japanese broadcaster NHK showed heavy damage to the mid-right side of the Navy ship, which appeared to be stationary in the water. People were standing on various parts of the deck.
There are injuries but the military hasnít confirmed to what extent. The incident is being investigated, it said.

Doesn't matter who is at fault, the Captain, the XO, the Navigation, and the OD will loose their careers. You don't fuck up like this, in peace time.

Who pays for the repairs to both ships, under maritime laws, is a different thing.
It will take years, lot's of lawyers getting rich, and the taxpayers of both nations will git shafted.

Yeah, those guys are all fukt. I would like to hear the details of this, though. How the hell do you fuck up so bad? We'll find out in the coming days what happened, I guess.

Video of damage here. From the looks of the damage, to me it looks like they were broadsided, they didn't run into anything, they were rammed. How the hell did that happen? 7 went into the sea? What were they doing, leaning over the rail watching the whole thing go down? General Quarters? What?

Doesn't make any sense to me, it would seem that there either had to be a very high level of incompetence on board that ship, or...I don't even know.

Doesn't sit right, yet. Need more info on what actually happened.

7 gone into the deep. RIP, yer in Davy Jones locker now, boys.

Waiting for what happened and how it comes out.
The cargo vessel has a slice across the bow and is damaged below the port anchor.
That anchor will do some damage.
The destroyer is smashed on the starboard side.
Those channels are narrow, ships go through very close.
One turns and there is no where to swerve away to.
Like on a highway with cars next to you.

This ^^ in the dark or in bad weather or some mechanical last second fuck up could be a good explanation. But it would have to be one very narrow channel.

And looking at the pics we have now, I bet there were probably guys on deck in various places and when they got rammed it rocked that fucker hard, tossing guys over...

Just heard some talking head expert explaining maritime rules of the road...

As they approached each other in pre-dawn, excellent visibility, the cargo ship was obviously approaching the path of the Fitzgerald. The cargo ship was damaged on its Port bow and the Fitzgerald on its Starboard side which tells us that the cargo ship was off the starboard side of the Fitzgerald and moving from right to left in front of the Fitzgerald (or so the course would have been). The Fitzgerald has the responsibility to yield to the right. The "give way" ship, which would have been the Fitzgerald, would then have a consistent obstacle to maneuver around to avoid collision and would be responsible for avoiding the cargo ship.

I have heard that if you look at the AIS at marinetraffic.com (automatic tracking system on board most all ships) you will see that the cargo ship had been doing some amazing maneuvering just prior to the collision. So they might not have been so predictable. In any case, cargo ship had responsibility to remain predictable (ie steady course and speed).

So, if that cargo ship was maneuvering and unpredictable, it may have confused the crew of the Fitzgerald.

So it seems to me that if the cargo ship was not holding a steady course and speed, and the Fitzgerald couldn'tpredict what it was going to do, then what?

But, it still doesn't make sense unless you just have to say massive incompetence on the part of the Fitzgerald.

Need more info.

I was on a carrier, the USS Eisenhower when we hit a parked ship while pulling into port.
The damn anchor chain went into the channel.
We slid starboard a bit to allow a sub to pass on the port.
The winds were blowing port to starboard.
It hit us just as we adjusted course so we hit the anchor chain and dragged the shit into us.
Scraped the starboard side of the ship.
I was in the hangar bay and saw it.
August 29, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower returned to Norfolk after a six-month deployment. While entering Hampton Roads at 0820, The IKE collided with the 897-foot Spanish bulk carrier Urdulitz. The Spanish vessel lay anchored at Berth Z, Anchorage A, adjacent to the Entrance Reach Channel, waiting to gain access to the coal loading piers at Lamberts Point, Norfolk. A total of 38 Spaniards were on board; 36 crewmembers and two additional people. Several hundred male "Tigers" were on board the Ike, having embarked two days previously at Bermuda. The accident resulted in an estimated $2 million damage to the Eisenhower and $317,128 damage to Urdulitz.
Those that try to talk about it probably never been their or done that.
Just shut your holes and wait for the verdict.
