Default China launches it's first domestically built aircraft carrier

The 50,000-ton carrier was towed from its dockyard just after 9 a.m. Wednesday following a ceremony in the northern port city of Dalian, where its predecessor, the Soviet-built Liaoning, also underwent extensive refurbishing before being commissioned in 2012, the Ministry of National Defense said.

Development of the new carrier began in 2013 and construction in late 2015. It's expected to be formally commissioned sometime before 2020, after sea trials and the arrival of its full air complement.

Some ol' sailor here: What's the advantage/disadvantage of having the "ski jump" and not US style steam catapult?

"Like the 60,000-ton Liaoning, which was purchased from the Ukraine, the new carrier is based on the Soviet Kuznetsov class design, with a ski jump-style deck for taking off and a conventional oil-fueled steam turbine power plant. That limits the weight of payloads its planes can carry, its speed and the amount of time it can spend at sea relative to American nuclear-powered carriers."

Oh. please! It's a 'jump' carrier, and at 50k tonnes it's a lite weight!
It can only handle the Ju-32, which is a ripoff of the F-18.
compared to our 7 super-carriers, china might just come up to what Britain and France has.

The advantage is you can launch smaller planes with a full load out.
and hope the pilot hits the afterburners at the right time.
Otherwise your in the drink, and the ship will run over you.
They work well with Vtols and prop jobs.

The advantage of a off-set flat deck, like the American carriers, you can launch and retrieve planes at the same time, and launch planes on both ramps. Namely you can put up twice as many, twice as quickly.

Also a larger ship carries more aircraft. 50k tonnes is about the size of a WW2 carrier. Todays super-carriers are about 120 to 150K tonnes, and carry 3 to 4 times the planes.
Also we don't use steam catapults anymore, they're electromagnetic, that gives a higher launch speed. 4 of our carriers have been retrofitted, and with rail guns too. Not 150 knots, but over 180 knots, and with that you can pack on a lot more arms and fuel!

You only have one carrier with emals, the first of the Ford class, all the rest are steam and won't be retro-fitted, you have no carriers with rail guns, just a littoral ship that's testing one.
The super carriers are 100,000 tonnes not 120,000 to 150,000 and they carry twice as many aircraft not four or five times as many.

sorry, your info is out of date. By about 10 years.
The 'weight' you mention is a class measurement, while the actual mass goes that high.
2 full air wings can man the big carriers, that's just over 80 planes.
compared to China's estimated 20 max, that ratio holds up.

also 4 carriers have been re-fitted with the EM cats over the last 6 years, and do have the 1st generation rail guns mounted.
The rail gun on the Littoral ship your talking about, is a 3rd generation, small caliber - high inertia mass driver. Much different.
