Default France goes to the polls to decide fate of Europe

Quote:
French voters decided Sunday whether to back pro-business independent Emmanuel Macron or far-right populist Marine Le Pen as their next president, casting ballots in an unusually tense and important presidential election that also could decide Europe's future.

With Macron the pollsters' favorite, voting stations opened across mainland France at 8 a.m. (0600 GMT) under the watch of 50,000 security forces guarding against extremist attacks. A security scare caused by a suspicious bag prompted the brief evacuation of the Louvre museum courtyard where Macron plans to celebrate election night.

France's Interior Ministry said voter turnout at midday was running slightly lower than during the last presidential runoff in 2012. The ministry said 28 percent of eligible voters had cast ballots, compared with a half-day tally of 31 percent five years ago.

Commentators think a low turnout would benefit Le Pen, whose supporters are seen as more committed and therefore more likely to show up to vote.
Macron voted in the seaside resort of Le Touquet in northern France alongside his wife, Brigitte Macron. Le Pen cast her ballot just a hundred kilometers away in Henin-Beaumont, a small town controlled by her National Front party.

Macron, 39, a former Socialist economy minister and one-time banker who ran as an independent, was all smiles and petted a black dog as he stepped out of his vacation home. For security reasons, he was driven to his polling station nearby.

Le Pen, 48, was able to vote without any incident after feminist activists were briefly detained a couple of hours earlier Sunday for hanging a big anti-Le Pen banner from a church in the northern town.
Meanwhile, police and soldiers worked to secure the symbolic Paris venues where the next president will celebrate victory.

The grand internal courtyard of the renowned palace-turned-museum Macron picked for his celebration party reopened after several hundred journalists preparing for the election event had to leave because of the security alert over the suspicious bag.

The museum itself was not evacuated, and tourists continued entering and leaving the site. The Louvre already was being heavily guarded after an extremist attacker targeted soldiers near the museum during the presidential campaign. Paris police said the evacuation was a "precautionary measure."

If Le Pen wins, she plans to celebrate at the Chalet du Lac in the Bois de Vincennes, a vast park on Paris' eastern edge.

Le Pen vs Macron

I anticipate a Macron victory, but something makes me wonder if the French press polls are intentionally misleading the French people, as US media outlets did to the American people. We'll find out soon enough.

I believe Macron is a more likable candidate than Hillary, but it isn't very difficult for anyone for that matter, to be more likable than Hillary Clinton, so it's no great feat.

I can't see Le Pen winning. I hope she does though, for the sake of France and her people.

Spectacular riots in france over the last couple of days. Vice got some serious footage. Worst ive ever seen, not so much for blood, but numbers, on both sides. Rubber bullets were fired.

In france they have tried to move the goal posts of the political spectrum and have failed miserably.

French people are lazy and afraid of change by nature. They just want to sip coffee and scarf down baguettes while talking about lost empires during their 2 hour work days. Weekly terrorist attacks is a price they're willing to pay for a continued status quo.

If Macron wins the French may as well start learning Arabic. I've been tempted to put a bet on Le Pen... I've never bet before, I'm not a gambler. I considered putting a small bet on Britain voting to leave the EU, the odds were fantastic, but although I wanted us to leave (I voted leave) the media had me convinced that leave had no chance.

I was tempted to put a small bet on Trump, the odds were phenominal, but the media had me convinced he couldn't win.

Now I've been tempted to put a bet on Le Pen, and once again the media has me convinced she can't win.

It would be way better for Brexit if Le Pen won.

That's the question: is the media misleading the public in France, using twisted polls to convince people that the conservative candidate has no chance, just as it did in the US election? Without an honest, forthcoming media reporting the full sets of facts, the public is operating blindly. Time will tell the truth.....

I agree. France's future will be decided today...they can be France, or they can become Francistan.

Haven't followed this whole thing too closely, it is disturbing hearing Daveypoo saying the media has him convinced...the media probably has a lot of people convinced over there, just like it did over here as Eric said, and as Eric also said time will tell.

But what really gets my goat is that despite finding out what bullshit all of the pre-election polls were here in the USA (and likely there across the pond), the media still pushes poll numbers on us daily about how awful Trump is and what a horrible job he's doing and people are believing these polls.

Like the polls suddenly became credible now that the election is over.

Fuck the polls, Daveypoo, go vote.
