Funny I've only ever had such problems with HP, MSI and all the cheap brands like Toshiba. Compaq started sucking in the early two-thousands then just became HP.

Dell, ASUS, Lenovo, and IBM have always been pretty well made. Gateway isn't that bad either as a suitor.

Whatever he chooses it should have a newer Intel chipset because it's better architecture and a better investment.

But I also could do with hitting the gym tbh.
I've got a 17" Alienware M17X (original 2009) dated but still powerful, I used that at college....didn't need the gym...carrying that around is a workout in itself!

Guess we will just have wait an see.
Its been my experience the first timers always go with the smaller note books or pads.
A learning experience to be sure but a necessary one for many.
What ever he chooses he will have to adapt .. there really isn't anything that's perfect for anyone there is always a trade off.
I only have a few criteria for choosing, the future, the warranty, the flexibility.

From my experience from owning and working on other peoples shit, the best laptops are midrange or above laptops from Asus.

Dell, HP, Gateway, Lenovo can suck my balls.
Lenovo has security issues. Some if not all security issues were intentional.

I've never bought a lappy before so I need advice on what types to look at.

My main uses:

M$ Office
Music (+maybe a few movies)
Internet browsing
Long battery life
Largeish palm rest as my hands are quite big
At least 2 USB docks so I can constantly use a usb mouse.
Lightweight and not too bulky.

That's all I can think of needing it for. My budget is about 300-350 EUROS ($400-450 USD)
Pretty much any laptop would do that to be honest. You won't need to spend too much for that. Your budget is very reasonable, even a little high for such basic use. Laptops are more a word for higher use, things like computer games, making music and movies, at the high end are animation work. To be fair I would recommend a notebook instead and get a separate palm rest.

They are much cheaper and designed for general internet and office software. Most do have several USBs and they are usually lighter than laptops due to the lack of hardware. You can buy them new on that budget and save the rest for buying an external drive so you can back up your data. Or if you want to buy second hand you can save even more money. I've seen notebooks go for as low as £60-70 in cash generator (or as we used to call it by its well-deserved name, 'smack' generator) and save yourself a packet. Some computer repair shops are basically chucking them out.

tldr google notebook on ebay or gumtree.
