Just a thought. it needn't be a radical reshaping of corners just a fine smoothing, those corners will look like a mountain range under a microscope, lots of tiny air traps, we aircraft mechanics don't like sharp edges, too many stress points. I wonder if this was a problem during the original manufacture, and if not what paint did they use.

Why don't you spend some of your beer money and have the pieces powder coated? Would look mucho better too...

But after MANY coats, the paint still does it, but not always in the same place. A nice little line of small bubbles right along a flat area at the edge. No dripping or flowing of the paint is evident - just the bubbles.

Thanks Dan, I hoped you would chime in on this.
I'm obviously not a good painter, and you know what your talking about.
I'll try your advice later today.

I get the polar and declination casings back from the shop Wednesday, and I'm trying to get everything painted before then. So by this coming weekend I can start assembling the scope.

I'll try to post some pics later.........
I'm no expert mate but I've done a lot over the years. It does sound like a solvent in the paint is picking up on edges of the underlying coats, remaining paints on the piece.
Using an aerosol? I'd distance the nozzle about 18 - 24" away and pass over the object quickly. Build up many layers almost like overspray. This will give a rough finish but once you've built it up, rub back with something like a 1600g wet and dry paper, using it wet. Be careful not to go all the way through the paint buildup, you'll be back to square 1. Then give a slightly wet coat to give a uniform finish.

The paints were an alcohol metal primer 1st, then a lead based light green primer, then the gloss black on top.
The lead base was why I chemically stripped it, instead of mechanically stripping it. Didn't want to be breathing all that leaded dust.

Some parts didn't have any primer on them, just the gloss black.
They probably didn't have any problems like I am, ya know, being professional.

Like I said, I'm gonna try this later today. Back off from it and build up several thin layers.

By the time I'm done these 4 parts will have 8 or 10 coats on 'em, while the other parts will have only the 4 coats I planned! LOL

Yeah a fine mist when painting and back off, let the rest run together.
Used to make the same mistake painting cars.
