You replace your primary hard drive in your computer with an SSD and it will noticeably speed it up. It is one of the best performance investments.

It's the single fastest way to upgrade your comp. You can't run an OS off a flash drive ... it will die in a few weeks ... an SSD has a smart controller that minimizes write cycles and extends the flash life.

Just Google some Recent reviews on them.
They are getting cheaper and better but apparently, when they die they just die. You get no chance to backup. I will wait till they get better, no hurry, not like my SATA6 is slow. I used an ATA6 to back up some photos. That seemed so slow when it used to be the fastest.

I just got a 64gb samsung 830 for my OS and a 250gb 840 as my main drive and the difference is phenomenal. everything instant. well worth it imo.

Probably good as a storage device and instant on/off function like a usb flash stick.
But yes as l8rm8e says using it for an OS wil ruin it because an OS constantly writes/reads small bits of data to and from a harddrive which a SSD is not designed for. It pisses up the chips. So I really don't know why so many ppl uses SSD drives for their Win7/Win8 partition to be on. Whether it's out of curiosity or they're dumb/indoctrinated into the 'fad' I've no idea. Maybe using an SSD for a Gaming drive might be better like if you install Steam games onto but just make sure your OS install is not on an SSD.

I'm waiting for prices to drop and the tech to be perfected (as much as it can be)

I use them, I have 10 of the 1 gig and 45 of the 512 and they are fast.
Good for server use and boot ups in half the time of the 7200 drives. However server use is where they shine best. For gaming and general usage the 7200 drive are fine if cached properly and the 20 seconds of ssd boot time as oppose to the 40 for the 7200 isn't that much. For laptops though they are very good but for desktops I would say stay with a good mechanical drive.
