Next week, I'm visiting most of the gun shops around here, and put my hands on any new Marlin they got in stock, hopefully one will have an 1895 I can look at. Best way to tell, put the gun in your hands.

Looking at long gun forums on the internet, most stopped around '12 '13 and didn't really address the remlin problems.

Did find some magazine articles about it:

http://www.gunsandammo.com/reviews/marlin-1894-review/

http://www.realguns.com/articles/425.htm

http://gunblast.com/Marlin-1895CB.htm

Of course I will keep an eye out for any Henry .45, used or new, that might be reasonably priced. Never know...........
Gotcha missed a page, my bad

So, you're going .45-70 or .45 LC?

The 1895 Cowboy is .45-70 Govt., which I'd prefer, mostly because of price.

The Henry original is .45 LC, which I'd jump at if I can find one at a reasonable price.

From my searching the, .45-70 can be hard to find, while the long colt is very popular.

I was surprised to see my go-to online source for bullets, Bulk Ammo, didn't carry the .45-70, but did carry the .45 LC listed as hand gun ammo.

I noticed that too.
One thing I like about the colt is I can get a long gun AND a revolver using the same cartridge. Good combo for hog hunting. also some of the ballistic charts I've seen, shows the colt with Hi-P and FMJ equivalent to the govt. standard grain in velocity and impact, just the distance is a little less.

If I got a Henry AND a revolver, say a Colt or Ruger, I'd spend 3 to 4 grand for both! I ain't got that much to spend!

Also looked at Mossberg lever, price was right, but only came in .30-30.

This is one reason I'm seriously looking a the Marlin.

Did some shopping this morning. On the way I stopped off at a pawn shop that has a huge # of long guns. Didn't have any older Marlin, just a few transition remlins, but none of them in .45-70. Did take a look at one remlin, and I could see why people don't like them. It was not very well made.
Had a couple Henry's, but only one in big bore, a .44-40, at about $1600.
He knew what he had!
He had a fairly new Winchester '86, that's in .45-70. Beautiful gun, but I can't use it. The block can't handle the modern ammo, and because it's top eject can't mount a scope.

Then stopped at a gun shop that did have a Marlin Cowboy in stock!
Came this close to getting it right there and then. But I held firm, told him I need to look around some more. He was a little high on his price too.
Man that gun felt good in my hands! Didn't really notice any bad problems. The mate finish on the woods matched, the bluing matched on the barrel and block, the eject and cocking was stiff but I would expect that on a new gun, balance was forward but manageable, sights are POS though, and sight height was low for me at fire position, but that's okay 'cause I'll be using a scope...mostly.
