This really is one of the best quality threads this forum has had.

No acrimony, great subject matter, important updates, and it resonates on a personal level of envy with anyone who has ever loved a car they owned. I, too, owned an old Chrysler I hated to let go. My '78 Chrysler Newport. A gorgeous behemoth of a land barge. A quick Google-Fu will show a car exactly lilke it, beige cream with a white vinyl roof.

I loved the turn signal indicators mounted on the fenders so the old people buying them would know they were making left-handed turns around the globe.

Wow awesome work! I love these vintage cars... I never had the talent to work on them.

I do remember when this one first hit the road, I was 9 years old living in Key West. It was the period of the American-Russian space race followed by Cassius Clay and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

I believe the huge fins were symbolic of the so called space vehicles of the day. I recall riding in the family car... our blue 1955 Ford Fairlane when one of these pulled up alongside at a stop. The fins scared the crap out of me.
I thought the car might explode... like our vanguard missiles were.

Thanks everybody for the nice comments.
FYI, that was sort of a break in! I've gently cruised a couple of hundred miles on the rebuilt motor before this. But I am very happy with the power this motor makes. And I got about 16-17 mpg there and back (not counting the actual slalom, of course) which is really quite good for a land barge with a carburated v8.
Motor is mostly stock (block and heads and even intake manifold.) Only real mods are a good exhaust and semi-custom shorty headers, bigger than stock carb, and slightly hotter cam, and about a point more compression and I ported/polished the heads myself (not a newbie at that, though.) I'd love to get it on a dyno and see what it makes. It will spin the 245/60 tires like there is no tomorrow.
