Edmund Fitgerald
gswifty gswifty is offline 11-10-2012, 09:27 PM

On this date 37 years ago, November 10, 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald ran into a winter storm and sank in Lake Superior. Captain and crew remembered.

Quote:
Carrying a full cargo of taconite ore pellets with Captain Ernest M. McSorley in command, the Edmund Fitzgerald embarked on her final voyage from Superior, Wisconsin (near Duluth), on the afternoon of November 9, 1975. En route to a steel mill near Detroit, Michigan, she joined a second freighter, the SS Arthur M. Anderson. By the next day the two ships were caught in a major winter storm on Lake Superior, with near hurricane-force winds and waves up to 35 feet (11 m) high. Shortly after 7:10 p.m. the Fitzgerald suddenly sank in Canadian waters 530 feet (160 m) deep, approximately 17 miles (15 nautical miles; 27 kilometers) from the entrance to Whitefish Bay near the twin cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Although the Fitzgerald had reported being in difficulty earlier, no distress signals were sent before she sank. Her crew of 29 all perished, and no bodies were recovered.

This touched all who worked on the water. I remember the sad news coming over the VHF radio. We were heading for the home port with the boat's bellies full of the last albacore trip of the season. The radios were silent the rest of that day. RIP all.

I was 8 years old and living on the shore of lake Huron on this date 37 years ago and remember the storm that sank her. I sat on our enclosed back porch and watched it whip lake Huron into a frenzy. It wasn't until the next morning we heard about the Fitz.

RIP.

The storms that come through the Great Lakes region can be as bad if not worse than those on the open oceans. I've sailed these waters I know!

Even with an experienced Captian and crew, it can happen.....quickly!

Rest with Davy Jones, the waters will give you up........

R.I.P.
Iv been caught in a few myself, and the problem with the Great Lakes depends on the dept of the water. Here on Lake Erie, being the shallowest the lakes, it can kick up in a matter of minutes. I was caught in a storm one afternoon and beached my boat because of the lightning and waves right behind the Perry nuclear power plant.

RIP gents.

The sea is an amazing force and these stories have always amazed me. What a way to go...the isolation, the cold, the force of the sea to be able to just swallow a ship...it just leaves you awestruck.
