As Eric mentioned ... flash/SSD is volatile and perishable ... it will last 3 to 5 years then die ... it is also smaller than traditional HD's. Every few months, they get better, cheaper, and faster too.

Performance is super snappy, and most modern OS's have ways to offload seldom used applications and data to a secondary storage tier. Nearly every Linux, Mac, and Windows OS has easy ways to exploit SSD's to geekgasm inducing levels. All the other OS's (Android, IOS, BB10, WP8) are already built upon flash and easily last more than 3 years of daily usage.

Fuck it .... get a bloody SSD and find out.

I will stick with my mechanical 1TB Sata drive for the time being.
Will they eventually make SSD's which don't degrade over time?
I mean I've had a 4GB memory stick for years, never had a problem with it fucking up

There are a million reasons a mechanical drive will fail before a non-mechanical drive ... however ... as flash memory is a hither-to unproven technology for storing corporate crime ... it is conservatively referred to as volatile or unreliable.

Real world performance already favours SSD ... just not reputation. (yet).

Wanna boot in a few seconds? Load a big app instantly? SSD is your only hope unless you're a millionaire with a cooling tower.

There are hybrid drives as well that give the best of both worlds of speed and capacity with a far less price tag as well, you may want to look into those as well.

If I bought a tank of liquid nitrogen or fill a fish-tank with sublimated CO2 and drop my pc into the dry ice vapours would it get my 7200 WD Caviar blue to the same of similar speeds as a flash due to CPU performance awesome-sauce?

Or will I make my 10,000rpm the main OS drive.

the thing is this new build i'm using loads up Win7 Ultimate x64 very fast compared to my old pc. And my old pc was using a nlite version of Server 2003 datacenter.

Win2003 used about 190MB of RAM when loaded fully to the desktop.
Win7 x64 ultimate is a full version and uses 1.6GB of RAM when loaded to the desktop which is a bit gay.

I downloaded rt7lite but have not got round to ripping out the crud from Win7 yet. When I do I hope it will run faster as I'm assuming it will.

The samsung 840 ssd is the first to use a triple NAND which means it has an even lower life span than older ssd`s (though is cheaper). However the minimum life span for an average user (writing 10gig per day) is still estimated to be 7 years. Myself being just a light user i am more than happy with this, however of course it all depends on your usage.

Ha ha ... the cooling tower would be for your "all RAM" supercomputer that can never be turned off. It's the next logical step on the evolutionary ladder to complete silliness.

But yes as l8rm8e says using it for an OS wil ruin it because an OS constantly writes/reads small bits of data to and from a harddrive which a SSD is not designed for. It pisses up the chips.

So I really don't know why so many ppl uses SSD drives for their Win7/Win8 partition to be on. Whether it's out of curiosity or they're dumb/indoctrinated into the 'fad' I've no idea.

Maybe using an SSD for a Gaming drive might be better like if you install Steam games onto but just make sure your OS install is not on an SSD.
Absolute nonsense.

For example, on the Samsung 840 Pro, if you were to write 10GB to the host each day (which is above average) with a WA of 3.5x, the drive would last you 60 years before it wears out thanks to wear leveling; the non-Pro version would last almost 20 years.

Even in the most extreme scenario of 10gib a day with a WA of 10x, the Pro version will last you 21 years.

The denigration is a non-issue. By the time the drive has denigrated to such a point as to compromise its performance/reliability, you will have a completely new storage technology out that would make your drive completely obsolete.

The SSD is currently the single best upgrade you can give your PC, it is the only component that will show you triple digit improvements if you have even a semi-modern PC.
