Exclamation Iranian gunboats harassed American warships

01/08/08 "NBC" -- - WASHINGTON - Iranian Revolutionary Guard gunboats harassed three U.S. Navy warships in the Strait of Hormuz Sunday, in what the U.S. military officials described as a "significant provocative act."

Military officials told NBC News Monday that two U.S. Navy destroyers and one frigate were heading into the Persian Gulf through the international waters of the Strait of Hormuz when five armed "fast boats" of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard approached a high speed, darting in and out of the formation.

At one point a radio message from one of the Iranian boats warned, "You are going to blow up within minutes."

The Navy warships went into defensive mode, radioed the usual warnings to steer clear, and in the end no shots were fired. U.S. military warships believe the Revolutionary Guard boats were "testing our defenses," the officials said.

The White House warned Tehran against taking such actions in the future. "We urge the Iranians to refrain from such provocative actions that could lead to a dangerous incident in the future," White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.

Iranian officials were not immediately available for comment Monday, and there was no news of the incident on Iranian state-run media.

Rising tension
The United States expressed concern when the Revolutionary Guard forces took over Iranian naval operations in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz from the regular navy more than five months ago.

However, Sunday’s incident was the first significant act of provocation since then.

Historical tensions between the two nations have increased in recent years over Washington's charge that Tehran has been developing nuclear weapons and supplying and training Iraqi insurgents using roadside bombs -- the No. 1 killer of U.S. troops in Iraq.

In another incident off its coast, Iranian Revolutionary Guard sailors last March captured 15 British sailors and held them for nearly two weeks.

The 15 sailors from HMS Cornwall, including one woman, were captured on March 23. Iran claims the crew, operating in a small patrol craft, had intruded into Iranian waters -- a claim denied by Britain.

I saw the CNN report from the Admiral in charge of the forces in that area. It was as scripted as it can get. Lets face it, the threat of nuclear weapons was debunked, so now the administration is going to feed us something else to escalate this, and on the eve of Georgie Boys trip to Israel to be "briefed on attacks on Iran". Come on people smell the coffee here, their going to fabricate anything they can in order to carry out their plans on Iran. Quiet honestly if something of this natural had taken place don't you think that the Arab news media would have been all over this. Anyone seen anything supporting this incident on their web sites or news casts? The world has been lied to repeatedly from this administration and now were expected to follow along blindly, please!!!!!!

More false propaganda to get you into a war with Iran?? Why?? To protect Israel again. Let Israel do its own fighting, they have the weapons and manpower, so let them use their own and leave us alone.

Three little gunboats attacking your warships?? Wise up Mr. Bush, you can't continue to fool all the people all the time.

Hi Wirlwind, you can calm down, i did not read anything in there that would indicate that the US was in any way asking for 'your' support in dealing with Iran.

You hate us and the US can do no good, our government is corrupt and evil, our people are fat and stupid, -you are right, we are wrong, those who do not agree with you are stupid liars and lemmings to the war machine and AIPAC...yes, yes, we know.

YAWN.

As far war with Iran; i don't know anyone here that wants to go to war with iran.

But that does not mean Iran, or people like you, should mistake our kindness as weakness...poke the big dog with a stick long enough and sooner or later he will chew your fucking face off.

The "significant provocative act" is the fact there are American warships in the Straits of Hormuz to begin with. If they weren't there, there could be no chance of confrontation with Iranian vessels. But that would spoil the fun, wouldn't it?

A fresh new war would breathe new life into neocon hopes for the presi-dential election, especially for semi-fascist dupes like Giuliani and McCain. Americans are getting bored with their old wars. Perhaps they would like a new one for diversion.

Bad economics makes war look like good business.

Doesn't this get old I bet if you stub your toe you blame it on Israel. If you knew anything at all you would understand that Bush has only limited powers in US. The Senate and the House has the most control over power or laws. I would be a little easier to convince if every fool out there didn't try to blame Israel because of the stupidity of the Iranian government. The Russians are going to take their money and run, like they always do.
