Initially it was to get Osama bin Laden. Pick up the book "Horse Soldiers" sometime and it gives a lot of info on the beginning of our campaign there. It went from getting Osama to taking down the Taliban and then (stupidly) to nation building. When people ask me of my experience there, I used to have a hard time describing it but now I explain it this way. Due to our military being run by politicians instead of actual generals our army is no longer a true fighting force. Imagine that this is World War Two. Essentially what we are doing in Afghanistan is like rebuilding Berlin Germany while we storm the beaches of Normandy. We are trying to rebuild a nation using an army while still still at war with its people.

On a side note, I had an interesting conversation with an older gentleman that lived about a click outside Fob Salerno. I asked him if he knew why the Americans were in Afghanistan and he had no clue. This guy lived 1km outside the base for 8 years at this point and had no idea what we were even there for. I told him we were there to fight taliban. He laughed and said that there were no taliban in our AO. Having found hundreds of IED by this point, I politely disagreed with him. He laughed again and said that there were no taliban. They were just assholes with nothing better to do. Sure as shit. He was right. This however only applied to the immediate area North east of Salerno. Still quite the interesting conversation though.

Get your dates right.

The reason we went into Afghanistan was to begin building the barrel into which we ultimately lured as many Jihadifish as could stream into said barrel so that we could get them all in one place for easier elimination, and also to keep the Fish focused on "The Shiny" and off other geographical places.
