Default Saudi Stopping Oil Tankers Due to Houthi Threat

Quote:
RIYADH/DUBAI (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia announced last week it was suspending oil shipments through the Red Sea’s Bab al-Mandeb strait after Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis attacked two ships in the waterway.
Source:
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-y...-idUSKBN1KK1ND

The Reuters article says the Houthis want to ratchet up the threat so they can negotiate a cease fire. That seem counter-intuitive to me. Saudi wants to militarily defeat the Houthis to send a message to Iran and so wants more U.S. support for that elusive victory. The U.S. and European Allies want to stay out of it and seem to want to cooperate with Saudi in using a pipeline. China and other Southeast Asian nations are using their own tankers and taking different routes. Iran is trying to threaten the U.S. to stay out of it.

I'm not really sure I care that much. At this point, the U.S. can use our own fuel. I don't really want to ratchet up our support for Saudi. We've been allies with them for a hundred years and we got 9/11 and a 15 year war out of it. If Europeans want to do something, that's on them. China can go suck an egg and I don't care what they do. I think we have enough oil to sell to Japan and South Korea. I don't know if we have enough to sell to Japan, South Korea and Australia and New Zealand so that's a consideration. Doesn't look like Venezuela is going to do anyone any good although if they had their shit together, they could take whole swaths of the Asian market. Socialists don't understand markets however so they're going to go around eating zoo animals and jailing their own people for digging in garbage cans too often or something lefty stupid like that. Who knows why socialists always claim to help the poor but are the first ones to throw the garbage diggers in jail after they get in power.

The one thing I'm happy about, for the first time, in one of these crisis situations, I do not give a flying duck about how any other country gets on. I don't think a single American life is worth any geopolitical game unless it's directly to benefit our own national security.

I don't know what the EU is going to do if this continues and escalates. They could always climb into bed with Russia and Iran. They got one foot there anyway and Germany already hopped right in with Russia.

I don't think there's a chance it's going to de-escalate any time soon. I also don't know if Trump's threats to Iran is enough to stop Iran from giving the aid to the Houthis so they can start blowing up tankers.

I do know, no matter what Trump does, our domestic enemies, the Democrats, are going to take the opposite side in the most dramatic way possible.

The investigative reporter Robert Fisk recently traced Al Qaeda weapons serial numbers to the Saudis.

https://www.independent.co.uk/voices...-a8459731.html

Seems like collective amnesia about 911 and what started this war on Terror in the first place.

That's a supply line of less than 2 months from the CIA to Al Qaeda.

https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article...tly#.wxrynXZg4

So how does this enhance national security again?

If they can sink anything in the canal it will stop up traffic good.
Even just in the Red Sea it will cause problems.

1) Robert Fisk was one of the first to sympathize with the Afghans over NATO after 9/11. His viewpoint means very little to me.

2) We've known that the Obama administration was aligning with Al Nusra (the al qaeda affiliate) and ISIS for years now. It's not new news. The only problem is that it's not going to be officially acknowledged because everyone wants to sweep it under the rug. I'd rather John Kerry, John Brennan, James Clapper and Obama were punished for it but I doubt that's going to happen so under the rug it goes.

3) The Houthis would need to seize the port, hold it and carry out a quite complicated operation on the sea. They aren't going to be able to do that by themselves. Even if they do, their end game may not be to just destroy oil tankers or whatever, it might be a bargaining chip for them to start negotiations for control of Yemen or parts of Yemen.

4) This doesn't have anything to do with 9/11. However, I'll never forgive the House of Sa'ud for the role they played, for what it's worth.

Yep. I don't see this de-escalating anytime soon.

Yep. I don't see this de-escalating anytime soon.
It's an extension of the Sunni vs Shia conflict. I don't see it finishing anytime soon given that the Saudi's are basically relying on Africans mercs to be the cannon fodder.

I don't see the US getting too involved in this one. Syria's played itself out and the public don't have an appetite for it.

The Saudis haven't been effective on the ground, and they would simply prefer to hire others to neutralize the Houthis. Their wealth has made them effete. Of course they would love it if Uncle Sam would 'step up' and do it all for them, but I'm with the previously posted opinions here: it isn't worth it to US. If the Houthis step things up enough to significantly interfere with international commerce, US and Saudi air power will step it up and make them wish they lived in Chad. Otherwise let the wealthy sheikhs deal with this Iranian proxy.

I think the whole world is pretty much done with sympathy toward that whole region. Literally the entire developed world try to help them get their shit together and join the developed world and instead they did the regular killing, hating, bitchin' thing. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. No one cares about them anymore.

I think that's right. If Houthis tried to hold a port, they're toast. If Iran interferes, I'm pretty sure the long awaited for overthrow of the Ayatollah will happen.

I'm pretty sure Muslims aren't done killing each other yet. They probably won't be in my lifetime.

I dont see any problem with that.
Saudis can always ask israel to use the port of Eilat to continue exporting oil.
Saudia is almost in front of Eilat.
That would not be a problem of any kind, beside we have ongoing developing relations with the new king.

Israeli ports (Eilat Haifa Ashdod) are the solution for the Saudis
